Red Palm Weevil: How to Detect It Early and Prevent It

Red palm weevil: how to detect it early and prevent it

The red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) has been wreaking havoc on palm trees in the Valencia region and Murcia for more than 20 years. In areas such as Elche, home to the largest palm grove in Europe, prevention is not optional: it is a practical obligation and, in many cases, a legal one.

How this pest works

The adult, a beetle up to 5 cm long, lays its eggs in wounds or soft areas of the palm. The larvae feed on the inside of the trunk for months, with no external signs until the damage is already severe. By the time symptoms are visible, the palm is usually already seriously affected.

Early warning signs

  • Asymmetry in the crown: the youngest central fronds lean or droop abnormally.
  • Sawdust or chewed fibres at the base of the fronds or on the ground under the palm.
  • Holes of 1–3 cm in the trunk or at the base of the fronds.
  • A fermented smell coming from the heart of the palm, a sign that the internal tissue is decomposing.

Preventive treatments that work

Endotherapy (injecting systemic insecticide directly into the trunk) is, together with regular foliar treatments, the most effective and environmentally friendly preventive method, as it minimises the impact on pollinators. The recommended frequency is usually 1 to 2 applications a year, coordinated with pruning.

Is it compulsory to treat palm trees?

In many municipalities of Alicante and Murcia there are regional regulations requiring notification and, in many cases, preventive treatment of palms in declared affected areas. If you are unsure about your municipality, our pest control service will check the condition of your palms and inform you of the applicable obligations.

What to do if there is already visible damage

If the symptoms are obvious, it is essential to act quickly: isolate the palm, assess whether an intensive curative treatment is viable and, if the structural damage is irreversible, carry out a controlled felling to prevent the pest from spreading to other nearby specimens.
